What are the Challenges of Parametric Modeling for Advanced Architecture?

Posted by on February 17th, 2014

Despite being an integral part of architecture, the major challenge for parametric modeling is that it remains to be indefinable since the days of history, when the term was first used by architects. On one hand, it can be defined as a form of architecture that has the goal of defining relationships between different dimensions that are dependent on various parameters.

On the other hand, there are some architects who have defined parametric modeling for advanced architecture as the process of highlighting fundamental changes that are intently a part of the design, and are typically related in a coordinated manner.

Parametric equations express “a set of quantities” with its respective number of parameters. The outcomes are then related to parameters with the aid of explicit functions. Some modern architects believe that correlation is an integral part of parametric relationships, which suggests that the concept typically arises from the study of mathematics.

As architecture is advancing at a rapid pace, leveraging cutting-edge technology at its best, it has become even more imperative to integrate mathematical formulations and parametric modeling to achieve more accurate, more reliable, and high quality designs for any kind of construction, manufacturing, or engineering projects.

Change is Parametric

One of the striking features of parametric modeling for advanced architecture is that geometry changes with changing parameters. Therefore, some architects claim that change is parametric. With advanced architecturally striking in all fields at a rapid pace, it is being found that entities and families once created can easily be changed.

In fact, this is one of the trademark behavior patterns of parametric modeling and that is it can be easily changed. Considering the mutual relationship between change and parametric modeling, it has been said that it is a constant or quantity whose value continuously varies with the changing circumstances of its applications.

Challenges of Parametric Modeling

There are several challenges that parametric modeling succumb to. Despite of the fact, parametric models distinguish itself uniquely from other types of architectural representations.

A parametric model can be defined as a set of equations expressing geometric model as explicit functions of a variety of parameters. Thus, parametric modeling is unique, not merely because it changes or it is a tool or style of architecture, but also for how it is created. Typically, such models are created by designers and architects, explicitly stating how the outcomes have been derived from a particular set of parameters.

Not many architects will prefer parametric modeling for advanced architecture, especially in a design that fosters exploration and creativity. However, it is considered a counterintuitive platform for creativity and innovativeness, and that’s why, it is often considered viable for architects to leverage a set of equations that finitely expresses a geometric model as explicit functions of different parameters.

Typically, the challenges associated with parametric modeling are discussed herewith:

  • Inability to think parametrically or thinking in a unique way that many designers aren’t accustomed to
  • The cost of changing to advanced architecture
  • Reported difficulties or issues with parametric models in practice
